The Division of Oil, Gas and Mining operates under the Utah Department of Natural Resources. The division was established in 1955 as the Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. It prevents wastage of oil and gas, encourages resource conservation and protects the correlative rights of oil and gas resource owners. The Division of Oil, Gas and Mining also conducts the reclamation of abandoned mine sites. It supports coal and mineral regulation programs. The division additionally supports an oil and gas program that promotes the exploration, development and conservation of oil and natural gas resources. It maintains a location in Salt Lake City.
