The Texas Department of Transportation, also known as TxDOT, is responsible for planning, designing, building, operating and maintaining the transportation system in Texas. It works in cooperation with local and regional officials. The department focuses on reducing congestion, enhancing safety, expanding economic opportunity, improving air quality and increasing the value of transportation assets. The Texas Department of Transportation registers motor vehicles, provides travel information and oversees various programs and services. It operates aviation, bridge, construction, design, environmental affairs, finance, general services, and government and public affairs divisions. The department also operates human resources, maintenance, motor carrier, occupational safety and public transportation divisions. Established in 1917, the Texas Department of Transportation maintains one of its locations in Keene, Texas.
