History
Sportsman's began on the corner of Jefferson and 35th Street in the early 1950s as Bailey's Barbershop. A strip center got built nearby in 1968, and Bailey's moved in. The shop has remained there ever since. It's name changed in the 70s to Sportsman's Barbershop when it was taken over by Mike Ivy and the late Jim Wright. They breathed new life into the neighborhood shop and brought with them a fresh crop of animal heads and fish to put on the wall. Ownership has changed a couple of times, and it is now in the hands of Mikey DeLeon. He got his first haircut here in the early 80s, and strives to keep the long-standing tradition of the Austin institution alive. Sportsman's has been witness to many colorful conversations, and it has seen plenty of local legends as customers. From local kids and college students to politicians, screen-writers, famous authors, and UT coaches (Darrell Royal included), this shop has been proud to represent Austin and its people for decades.
