The Alchoholic Rehabilitation Center of Bexar County, San Antonio, established in 1963, is one of the oldest residential alcohol and drug abuse treatment facilities in the area. It serves more than 500 high-risk clients each year and maintains one of the highest completion and six-month abstinence rates of any similar program. Clients are usually referred to it by the justice system for impaired driving and drug possession convictions. In the course of its work, ARC uses a number of licensed clinical dependency counselors trained in medication, nonviolent intervention and computer-based patient record. A nonprofit corporation, it receives funding from sources such as the county and state government, the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse and the Texas Rehabilitation Commission.
