Hutchins (HJ) is a state jail that is operated by the Correctional Institutions Division, which is governed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Established in 1995, Hutchins (HJ) has been accredited by the American Correctional Association. The facility employs more than 400 staff members and can accommodate up to 2,000 male inmates. It is spread over an area of over 65 acres. The facility has capabilities for providing dental, mental health and ambulatory medical services. It administers a variety of educational programs, including adult basic education, cognitive intervention, and career and technical education. Hutchins (HJ) also coordinates a range of community work projects for nonprofit organizations and city and county agencies, such as the Habitat for Humanity, Texas Department of Transportation and Texas Parks and Wildlife.
