The Housing Authority of Travis County is an independent, government-funded agency that provides housing opportunities for low-income families. Its Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is one of the largest federally funded programs that assists families and individuals by subsidizing their housing facilities in the private market. The authority s Family Self-Sufficiency program helps individuals become economically self-sufficient and find job opportunities and educational assistance. It partners with the Austin and Travis County Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation to administer the Shelter Plus Care (S+C) program, which provides permanent housing and support services to homeless individuals. Additionally, it offers long-term rental assistance for families that were displaced by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita through the Disaster Housing Assistance Program.
