Life took an unexpected turn for Jose Luis Orona, Jr., when he lost his younger brother to cancer. After graduating from Texas A&M University in 2006 with an engineering degree, Jose rejected offers from several engineering firms to instead work as a Sales Professional for Family Heritage Life Insurance Company of America (FHL). “For the first time, I saw how people can lose everything they’d worked so hard to achieve when faced with things like cancer,” Jose says. “I really wanted to raise awareness about the huge difference that being prepared can make.” Jose chose Family Heritage Life because of the Company’s insurance products and the integrity of the people offering him the opportunity. Though he’s had many successes representing FHL as Sales Director of the Texas Nexus Business Group in San Antonio, Texas, Jose says his greatest accomplishments are yet to come. He gives much credit to those with whom he works. “No one does this alone. My business partners are the fuel that makes this thing go,” he says. Jose most enjoys helping others realize their potential. “It’s amazing to watch someone progress from a person of fear and hesitation to a person of boldness and action. Everyone who comes here grows in some way,” he says. Knowing FHL insurance products help relieve the financial burden of unexpected healthcare costs is especially rewarding. “Even though we can’t take away the anguish of watching their loved one suffer, we can help the family have one less thing to worry about, as FHL’s products provide some financial relief during the time of illness.” Community involvement is important to Jose. A member of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in San Antonio, Jose helps local small businesses connect through his magazine, Business Adviser, San Antonio Edition. Jose and his family also give back in his brother’s name with the Francisco Orona Memorial Scholarship, awarded annually to a high school senior. Texas Nexus has become a major supporter of Ferrari Kid, an organization that helps children with cancer by making them a star for a day. The Agency also supports Wigs for Kids, Mission Pink in the Rio Grande Valley, and breast cancer awareness. In his free time, Jose enjoys rooting for the Texas A&M Aggies and the San Antonio Spurs as well as being with friends and family.
