History
On March 16, 1994, the Willie Mae Mitchell Community Opportunity Center was established as a community-based youth organization. On Nov. 21, 2001, the organization was accepted into the membership of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and was renamed the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Texas (BGCSCT). Since its inception, the BGCSCT has proudly served the youth of Caldwell, Comal, Guadalupe and Hays counties. Our Club provides children with a safe place to learn and grow; ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals; life-enhancing programs and character development experiences; and hope and opportunity for all members. We are a public, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization located in San Marcos, Texas. One of the BGCSCT's most unique features is that it is one of only two clubs in the United States that operates a charter school, Texas Preparatory School, which implements BGC programs and operates according to the BGCSCT mission.
Specialties
The Luling Extension offers a FREE After School Program and Summer Program Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. for children entering first through eighth grade. The Luling after school program provides a safe place for kids to learn and grow every day after school. Statistics show that 15.1 million kids in America are left unsupervised after school, juvenile crime escalates between the hours of 3 and 7 pm and 3 out of 10 kids are obese or overweight (bgca.org). The club is open when kids need us most and provides a wide range of programming that equips members to beat these statistics. Members have access to programs in five core areas: Character & Leadership; Education & Career; Health & Life Skills; The Arts; Sports, Fitness & Recreation. These programs promote and enhance members' sense of accomplishment and ability to make positive, healthy life choices. This Luling Extension is sponsored by the City of Luling and the Economic Development Corporation.
