The Weigel family entered the dairy business in 1931 with a herd of four cows, selling raw milk for nine cents a gallon. In 1936, a used pasteurizer was purchased and the dairy became one of the first in East Tennessee to distribute pasteurized milk. In 1947, a new plant was modernized, and ice cream and cottage cheese production were added. Weigel s Farm Stores now operates nearly 50 dairy and convenience stores, all within a 50-mile radius of the corporate headquarters in Powell, Tenn. The stores represent convenience retailing, offering pay-at-the-pump gasoline and competitive pricing. Some of the products that the company offers to its customers include Weigel s Dairy Line of milk consisting of whole, reduced fat, buttermilk and chocolate varieties; SKIM D LITE, a line of no-fat milk; Weigel s Premium Orange Juice; iced tea; fruit drinks; and coffee and cappuccino.
