Tennessee Army National Guard, operational since 1887, has more than 10,700 soldiers. The organization is assisted by the Tennessee State Guard as a force multiplier. Tennessee Army National Guard is a part of the Tennessee Military Department, which works for the protection and safety of the general public. The Tennessee Military Department operates Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), which responds to various emergencies and natural disasters. Tennessee Emergency Management Agency employs a staff of over 100 people in nearly 30 branches throughout western and eastern Tennessee. The Tennessee Military Department also governs Tennessee Air National Guard, which works with the U.S. Air Force and the National Guard Bureau.
