The Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute is operated by the Tennessee Department of Mental Health & Developmental Disabilities. The institute provides inpatient psychiatric services for adults and children. Established in 1953, the Tennessee Department of Mental Health & Developmental Disabilities plans and promotes a range of prevention, treatment, early intervention and rehabilitation services based on the needs of individuals and families. It maintains an alcohol and drug abuse service division that offers substance abuse prevention and treatment services. The Tennessee Department of Mental Health & Developmental Disabilities provides system planning and monitoring services and formulates policies and standards. Additionally, it offers information and advocacy services to individuals with mental and emotional disorders.
