Middle Tennessee Electric Membership is a nonprofit cooperative electric distribution system that provides electricity to more than 160,000 residential and business members in a four-county area directly south of metropolitan Nashville. Each of its members maintains part ownership. Formed by farmers and homeowners in 1936, it has grown to become the state's largest electric cooperative and the sixth largest in the United States. Middle Tennessee Electric Membership s corporate headquarters is in Murfreesboro. It has branch offices in Franklin, Lebanon, Smyrna, and Woodbury, Tenn.
