Department of Commerce & Insurance, located in Nashville, Tenn., is responsible for enforcing the state's insurance laws. The department supervises more than 1,700 insurance companies and other entities licensed or otherwise authorized to do business in Tennessee. It offers a range of consumer insurance services to educate consumers about insurance-related issues, disaster assistance and referrals to special programs. Department of Commerce & Insurance also investigates and mediates insurance claims and other insurance-related disputes as a third-party mediator. In addition, the department is responsible for the licensing and regulation of insurance producers, business entities, title agencies, surplus lines agents, automobile club agents and education providers.
