Jan Purcell is a CNP in Gastroenterology at Rapid City Hospital. Jan earned her graduate degree in Nursing from South Dakota State University, where she was also an adjunct nursing instructor for the Undergraduate Nursing Program. She defended her master's thesis in 2001 on Rodeo Injury Prevention. Previously, Jan earned her undergraduate degrees in Biology and Nursing at University of South Dakota and South Dakota State University. She has both hospital and clinic experience and is currently focusing on the inflammatory bowel disease patient population in the clinic setting. Jas has served on the South Dakota Nurse Practitioner board as member at large, treasurer and president. After the September 11th attacks, Jan joined the United States Army reserves and served at Ft. Benning, G. and Ft. Riley, KS. She has been an active member of American College of Gastroenterology, serving on the membership committee and is currently on the Advanced Practice Education board, which helps develop education modules for new Gastroenterology APPs. In 2010, she was nominated South Dakota Nurse Practitioner of the year and then, in 2020, Nurse Educator of the year at Christus Health in Tyler, TX. She approaches her work with a simple philosophy: “at the end of the day, do what is right for the patient.” Originally from Eastern South Dakota, Jan returned to Rapid City to be near her family and enjoy her seven busy grandchildren. She is a master gardener, a certified pet therapy handler and can soon be found in the library with her dog Bernard helping children in the learning to read program.
