Established in 1930, the South Carolina Highway Patrol is a law enforcement agency that prevents crime, protects residents lives and their property, suppresses criminal activity and apprehends law offenders. It is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The agency employs a staff of more than 900 troopers who provide patrolling services on over 64,500 miles of highway. The South Carolina Highway Patrol maintains the Aggressive Criminal Enforcement (ACE) team, which is charged with the duties of drug interdiction and felony apprehension and arrest. In addition, it has the Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT), which specializes in forensics and vehicle dynamics, as well as highway engineering and design.
