Old Chicora is an adaptive reuse project led by Metanoia, a local nonprofit community development corporation, that aims to transform a historic elementary school in North Charleston, South Carolina into a community-centered development featuring an early childhood learning center, affordable artist work studios, a performing arts center, and an educational space for the community.
Originally constructed in the 1930s, Old Chicora served as a beloved educational institution for over seven decades before closing in 2012. After a community-based campaign led by Metanoia, the Charleston County School Board agreed to build a new elementary school nearby, allowing for the preservation and revitalization of the historic Old Chicora campus. Despite a delay caused by a fire in 2020, the project is expected to resume in late September 2023, with the demolition of fire-damaged portions of the building.
