Robbie Donald Buechler, MD, PhD
Dr. Robbie D. Buechler, M.D., Ph.D., is a distinguished neurologist and sleep medicine specialist with extensive clinical practice and research expertise. Dr. Buechler's journey in medicine began with a Bachelor of Science degree with High Honors in Biochemistry and a near double major in Philosophy from the University of California at San Diego. He then pursued his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Pharmacology and Molecular Biology at Chicago, focusing on the effects of cholesterol agents on cholesterol metabolism and cellular growth and carcinogenesis. Building on this foundation, he earned his M.D. from Chicago Medical School. Following his education, Dr. Buechler completed various residencies and fellowships, including Neurology Residency and Chief Neurology Residency at Duke University Medical Center, and fellowships in Epilepsy/Clinical Neurophysiology and Sleep Medicine at Mayo Clinic, MN. He is board-certified in Sleep Medicine, Clinical Neurophysiology/Epilepsy, and Psychiatry/Neurology. Currently, Dr. Buechler serves as the Chief of Neurology for both inpatient and outpatient care at MUSC Health Lancaster, where he also holds the position of Stroke Director and Medical Director of the Sleep Laboratory. Throughout his career, Dr. Buechler has held numerous leadership roles and contributed significantly to medical education as a supervisor and trainer for physician extenders and participating in various institutional committees. Dr. Buechler's professional contributions extend beyond clinical practice. He has been actively involved in research, participating in multiple clinical trials and studies focusing on neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and sleep disorders. His research has resulted in numerous publications and presentations, demonstrating his commitment to advancing medical knowledge and improving patient care. Recognized for his expertise and compassionate care, Dr. Buechler has received several awards and honors throughout his career, including being named "Most Compassionate Doctor" and "South Carolina's Favorite Physician" by patient choice associations. He is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Neurology, the American Epilepsy Society, and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. His commitment to medical education was further recognized last year when he was awarded Preceptor of the Year at VCOM for his exceptional teaching of medical students, where he served as a clinical professor, mentoring and guiding the next generation.
