For 30 years, the Milton Animal League has been providing a safe haven for Milton's homeless cats and dogs. Partnered with Animal Control Officer Linda Knappenberger, the "no-kill" shelter is run entirely by volunteers who care for animals surrendered by their owners or rescued by Animal Control. All cats and dogs, unless they pose a threat to humans or have a terminal illness, remain in the League's care until they are retrieved by their owners or adopted. Before adoption, all animals are spayed or neutered, and receive all necessary shots and examinations. According to League President Nancy Bersani, the current facility is in disrepair, and a building fund has been established for a new shelter. In addition to seeking monetary contributions and donations of supplies from its "wish list," the shelter also relies on a steady flow of volunteers from the community and local schools.
