Francisco's Hilltop Gardens, located at the entrance to the Smithfield Crossings Plaza on Putnam Pike, was established in 1938 by John and Grace Francisco. The Francico's began selling vegetables here during the Great Depression, and over the years expanded the business to include fresh flowers, handmade baskets, wreaths and Christmas trees. When John died in 1961 Anthony-the 2nd oldest of John and Graces' six children- took over the business. He and his wife June then began to expand the business, including selling bagged soils, shrubbery, chrysanthemums and other nursery items in addition to the already busy vegetable and flower business. Hilltop today carries only the finest annuals and perennials in the area, a varied selection of small, medium and large shrubbery, as well as a variety of fruit trees including apple, plum, pear, cherry, blackberry, blueberry, grape and raspberry bushes. Larger and more exotic varieties are available by special order. Hilltop also sells items like Storage Sheds, Crooked Playhouses and Seaside Casual Furniture. Hilltop is currently stocking a full line of roses including Knock Outs, Floribundas, Hybrid Teas and Climbers in nearly every color.
