United Steelworkers of America, headquartered in Pittsburgh, is a union of employees from various industries that work together to improve jobs and working conditions. The union s mission is to build futures for employees and their families and promote fairness, justice and equality both on the job and in society. The organization includes more than 1.2 million working and retired members throughout the United States and Canada. The sectors of the North American economy that are represented in the United Steelworkers of America include metals, mining, manufacturing, health care and various services in the public and private sectors. Established as the Steel Workers Organizing Committee in 1936 to coordinate the drive to organize the North American steel industry, the organization grew to become the United Steelworkers of America in 1942.
