Established in 1970, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, also known as PennDOT, oversees programs and activities related to urban and rural public transit, airports, railroads, ports and waterways. The department is responsible for the maintenance of more than 24,000 bridges and over 39,000 miles of highways. It issues various vehicle registration certificates and drivers licenses. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation also oversees safety and emission inspection programs. The department manages nearly 15 welcome centers for visitors. It governs a highways administration division that provides design, construction, and safety and traffic engineering services. The department operates various transportation stations and administers the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Bank program. It is a part of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
