The creative atmosphere at Gateway stimulates the imagination and creativity of children through play, music, art, language, drama, special projects and events. Its bright light building and playgrounds encourage free flowing interaction and movement so that the children can be supervised and feel independent at the same time. Just the right balance of structure and freedom allows the children to grow and develop at their own pace. Our "team teaching" approach demonstrates, on a daily basis, how collaboration, cooperation, sharing of ideas and taking turns work successfully. Our Preschool children are divided into two groups, the PRIMARIES ( 3 - 4 year olds ) and the JUNIORS ( 4 - 5 year olds ). This program is five days a week from 9 - 12 with an optional MINI - LUNCH until 1pm and AFTERNOON ENRICHMENT until 3pm. The KINDERGARTEN day is five full days from 9 - 3. We maintain an excellent student/teacher ratio - 8 to 1 in the preschool and 7 to 1 in kindergarten - which allows us to recognize and cater to each child's individual needs and interests. In addition to planned parent/teacher conferences and detailed written reports, our teachers are always available to discuss any issues and answer questions. Gateway Preschool is a non-denominational non-profit organization licensed by State Board of Private Schools and the State of Pennsylvania. The school admits children of any race, color, and national or ethnic origin. During World War II, Gateway served as a daycare center for the children of war workers on the Main Line. In 1947, it became a nursery school and in 1966, Thacher Longstreth converted it to a nonprofit private independent preschool. Soon after this, a young dynamic teacher named Ruth Williams came to Gateway. In 1977, she took over as director. Williams raised the academic standards of Gateway, instituting "team teaching" and bringing more creativity into the classroom. In 1987, under the leadership of Ruth Williams and then assistant director, Patti Isakov, Gateway acquired and renovated its current facility and added a full day kindergarten. Today the school resides in a 1790 historic twin miller's house on Old Gulph Road. It has all the charm of a one-room schoolhouse outside, and all the possibilities of a large dynamic school inside. When you walk through the door, Gateway unfolds into a series of inviting and varied rooms situated on several levels. It's designed to encourage freedom of movement and expression. Since the beginning, Gateway has limited its enrollment to under 90 children. Our small size is a big part of who we are. We're very proud of the fact that Gateway continues to attract generations of families and experienced, dedicated teachers who stay for many years. Since the day we opened our doors, we have felt privileged to be a part of these precious preschool years.
