In 1847 seven Sisters of Mercy from Ireland established Pittsburgh s first hospital, Mercy Hospital, which has since grown into Pittsburgh Mercy Health System. The system is a network of medical facilities and programs that provide services to residents in and around the Pittsburgh area. Its flagship facility is still Mercy Hospital, which offers services in the areas of heart care, cancer care, trauma and burn treatment, women s health, children s health, senior care, diabetes, nerve disorders, behavioral health and rehabilitation. The system s other facilities include Mercy Jeannette Hospital, Mercy Hospital North Shore and Mercy Senior Care. Pittsburgh Mercy Health System is a member of Catholic Health East, a nationwide, nonprofit, Catholic-based health care system.
