The National Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Allentown, PA is a historic church that has been serving the Lord for 157 years, since its founding in 1857 by Bishop now Saint John Neumann. The present Gothic church building, dating back to 1900, has been designated as the National Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops in 1974.
Over the years, the church has been led by eighteen successive pastors, and it is home to a portrait of Our Blessed Mother, as she appeared to the Aztec Indian, Juan Diego. This portrait is placed over a side altar, and a Mass in her honor is celebrated annually on or near December 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
