Located in Butler County about 28 miles north of Pittsburgh, Zelienople's 2.2 square miles has plenty of housing, businesses and more. The town was named for Zelie, the eldest daughter of the town's founder, Baron Dettmar Basse, who came to the area in 1802 from Frankfurt, Germany. Basse built his own private residence and then proceeded to lay out the village. The borough offices are located on West New Castle Street in the same historic building that is home to the police department and also council chambers. The manager is Don Pepe, who oversees all borough departments and services excluding the police department and the fire department. Zelienople has more than 20 employees working for the borough. The borough, which is home to the Strand Theater, also hosts the Horse Trading Days arts and music festival.
