The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is the official history agency of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Founded in 1945, the agency is responsible for the collection, conservation and interpretation of Pennsylvania's historic heritage. It offers a variety of public history programs and services that educate, inform and provide resources for the management of historical and cultural resources throughout the commonwealth. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission also provides grant programs for museums, historical societies, local governments and other nonprofit organizations that preserve and interpret historic artifacts, documents and structures. It operates the Bureau for Historic Preservation, which identifies and protects the architectural and archaeological resources of Pennsylvania.
