Called the oldest continuously inhabited dwelling in the Lehigh Valley, Shelter House is in the South Mountain woods at the edge of Emmaus. The oldest section of the two-story colonial log cabin was built along a Lenni Lenape Indian trail in 1734, 25 years before the Moravians established a village named Emmaus. In those days, the area was known as both Macungie and Salisbury. Shelter House is on the National Register of Historic Places. The restored house, still occupied, is open for tours by appointment. The property is owned by Emmaus but preserved and maintained by the Shelter House Society. To see Shelter House, drive up S. 4th Street till it ends, turn left on Fairview Street and follow the signs.
