When David Kline started his small business in Red Lion, PA twenty-five years ago, he started with two looms in a rented location. The first productions were coverlets, which they still personalize today. As the business grew, they began making table runners. That rental location lasted for two and a half years before the business had grown so much that Mr. Kline was able to purchase a location outside of town. Also joining in the business were David's wife Carole who has kept the company books from the beginning, as well as the Kline's son Pat and his wife Kelly. Today Family Heirloom Weavers has expanded from those 2 looms and family members, to over 40 looms and 18 employees. The business has also expanded into a second location. The one location also gives tours that provide the chance to see the looms at work. A show house stands next to the mill and work produced on the looms can be seen in room settings. The Klines were asked if they would be interested in reproducing a carpet woven in 1840 for President Abraham Lincoln's house which was being renovated. The request came from a customer who had purchased a coverlet. Since then, they have manufactured carpets for nine houses of former U.S. Presidents, as well as other historic homes, museums, and sites such as Colonial Williamsburg. Carpets and materials have been used in homes throughout the United States and Canada, as well as Europe. Material woven by Family Heirloom Weavers has been used in several movies such as Public Enemies and Cold Mountain. Reproductions of antique carpets often come from pieces of the original brought to the Kline's by customers. From scraps of material the weavers match colors and patterns as close to the original as possible. The Klines strive to keep their productions as historically correct as possible. Regardless of whether it is a museum or a private home, the quality and accuracy of these carpets provides the customer with a way to bring the interior design of the home back to the period in which it was built. Family Heirloom Weavers has expanded beyond the coverlets, runners and ingrain carpet. Bedding, curtains, carpet bags and material are crafted in the mills today. The expanded lines can be seen not only in the show house, but on display at various trade shows in the region. What started as a simple family business now proudly sees their work in some of the most famous homes in the world. To be linked to the homes of such famous men as Washington, Lincoln, Monroe, Jackson, Grant, Buchanan, Twain and the Wright Brothers is an honor that few companies can boast of. The list grows as their reputation of quality and accuracy grows.
