Berean Institute, located in North Philadelphia at 1901 W. Girard Avenue, was founded in 1899 by Dr. Matthew Anderson as Berean Manual and Industrial School. Originally offering business and vocational courses for black students when other institutions were inaccessible to them, the institute has since expanded its curriculum to adapt to the evolving needs of its students.
Dr. Anderson, the institute's founder, served as Principal until his passing in 1928, while his wife, Dr. Caroline Still Anderson, was a dedicated teacher and Assistant Principal for over thirty years. In addition to his work with the institute, Dr. Anderson also established the Berean Presbyterian Church in 1880 and founded the Berean Savings Association.
