During the 1980s, Western Pennsylvania was home to a number of industrial distributors, their presence made possible by a booming steel industry and the variety of Westinghouse affiliated businesses in the area. These established distributors did not cater to many medium and small-sized machine shops. In this failure of existing distributors to meet the needs of small shops, Mary Catherine Motchar, James Clayton, and David Tosh saw an opportunity. In 1985 they founded Arbor Industrial Supplies, Inc.
