Founded in 1969, United Community Action Network is a private nonprofit community action agency that promotes resources and opportunities in all parts of Douglas County, Ore. Through operations of programs and in partnerships with other agencies, it strives to increase the self-sufficiency of the low-income populations. In its transitions programs, for example, it provides self-help education and training programs that help participants through major life transitions, building on strengths and overcoming barriers to self-sufficiency. These programs include academic skills upgrade, computer literacy training, and a personal growth curriculum designed to promote the development of a strong sense of self-worth and competence. In its confidence clinic, courses are offered in assertiveness, communications, parenting, values, goal setting and decision making, among others.
