History
Cascade Geographic Society was established in 1979 and incorporated as a non-profit in 1984. Our all-volunteer organization focuses on historical research, preservation and restoration. We are funded by memberships, profits from festivals, tours, storytelling, and educational activities for school groups. Our volunteers come from all walks of life: teachers, contractors, university students, the high-tech. industry, retired folks, etc. The common thread is the love of authentic history: not being beholden to political pressures or government funding, we are able to offer historical information that doesn't always shed a lovely light on the past.
Specialties
Our non-profit volunteer organization offers tours of the section of the Portland Underground that we have been excavating and restoring for two decades. These are educational, historical tours which are the result of fifty years of authentic research; this controversial history will be explained, with physical confirmation of unusual building practices, and the sharing of oral histories from those whose families or friends were shanghaiied out of Portland.
