History
1840 A Methodist mission was established at Clatsop Plains. Rev. John Frost was assigned by Jason Lee, superintendent of the Methodist Mission on the Willamette River (Salem). Frost arrived in July 1840 to work among the coastal Indians. 1843 A group of Methodists organized the first congregation. Services were conducted in their log cabins. 1853 Astoria's population had grown to about 250 and the Methodists felt a need for a building. The first Methodist Church building was built on the northwest corner of 15th Street and Franklin Avenue (Lot No. 12 of Block No. 115, J.M. Shively's Astoria). This lot is one block west of the present Masonic Lodge building. James Welch gave this land for the building with the specification that the church be not less than 20 by 30 feet and it should be built within six months.
