Durham and Bates has been a leading insurance broker serving the Pacific Northwest for nearly a century. The company traces its roots back to 1907, when M.C. Harrison and C.P. Sargent expanded their ship chandlery business to provide Hull and Cargo insurance to ship-owners. In 1911, Gilbert Durham purchased the insurance portion of the company. Donald Bates joined him in 1920, formally establishing Durham and Bates. Today, the company is an expanding, multi-lined agency providing risk management services to a number of industries. The company specializes in construction, manufacturing, food processing, marine, technology, life sciences, environmental and pollution, workers compensation, director and officer and employment practices liability insurance. Durham and Bates is headquartered in Portland, Ore.
