History
Sheila Watson founded Discovery Gardens Family Childcare in 2002, a result of having four small children of her own and being disappointed in the lack of affordable, safe and reliable childcare. Discovery Gardens was created to meet the needs of families searching for childcare programs in smaller, unique, secure environments. The name, Discovery Gardens came from one of the first families who enrolled in the beginning of this endeavor; the inspiration being the foundation of our teaching style, all children learn from their five senses, and the amazing garden that the children create every year. Today, Sheila Watson has three incredible certified childcare facilities that encompass her earlier vision. She has raised the bar by offering excellent student-to-teacher ratios, family support/assistance, healthy meals, in a structured and educational setting. This is an accomplishment she can be proud of, knowing that the care being provided is the same that she would provide for her own.
Specialties
Early childhood has taught us through practice and research, that a child's emotional, social, and cognitive development is created by relationships in the classroom setting and at home. Our program encourages positive peer and social relations, and development of self-esteem by providing caregivers and creating an environment that fosters independence and problem-solving skills. From our Infant program all the way to our Big Kid program, all programs at Discovery Gardens are literacy rich - not only through instruction in areas such as English language skills and teaching the children how to sign, as well as giving them the opportunity to learn other languages, but also in connecting literacy concepts to the world around them through combining writing with art, labeling, and books, along with our regular day-to-day activities. Discovery Gardens has built a strong foundation through the relationships we have developed with our families and their children. This foundation fosters a safe and trusting environment in which child can learn, create, and grow.
