The Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority was created by legislation in 1985. Its mission is to provide reliable, low cost energy and services to municipal entities to enable each municipality to be competitive, while maximizing the benefits to stakeholders. Since 2001, the authority s motto has been Owned by the people we serve. In 2005, the OMPA supplied wholesale power and distribution system support to 35 municipal electric systems in Oklahoma and partial requirements to four cities in Kansas. The authority uses a variety of generation methods, including coal, hydroelectric and wind. Since September 2003, OMPA has offered wind-generated electricity to its member cities for sale to their residential and commercial customers. Through the use of Oklahoma Gas & Electric s transmission system and a long-term contract with Florida Power and Light Energy, OMPA owns, purchases and transmits wind electricity output from 34 General Electric 1.5- megawatt turbines from the Oklahoma Wind Energy Center located northeast of Woodward, Okla.
