HUD was founded in 1965 as a cabinet-level agency by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. It offers a range of housing solutions and services that includes the buying, selling and renting of residential properties. The agency works for creating affordable housing opportunities for individuals and families that have a low-income. It also provides various care and support services to homeless individuals, senior citizens and people suffering with disabilities and AIDS. The agency promotes economic and community development, as well as operates a law enforcement center. HUD additionally offers several home buying programs. In addition, it offers grants for a variety of housing projects through the Office of Departmental Grants Management and Oversight. HUD maintains one of its locations in Columbus, Ohio.
