Carl R. Hirzel, a brew master by trade, founded Hirzel Canning Company in 1923. The company grew steadily and is in its third and fourth generations of family ownership. Hirzel has three processing plants located in northwest Ohio. The plants have extensive greenhouse and farming operations that produce some of the raw product requirements. In addition, more than 30 independent growers supply fresh tomatoes. Hirzel Canning primarily produces canned tomatoes and tomato products, along with sauerkraut. A complete assortment of more than 100 items is available in retail and food service sizes and packed in metal cans, glass or flexible packaging. Hirzel markets its canned tomato products under its private label, Dei Fratelli and Star Cross brands, and sauerkraut under the Silver Fleece brand name.
