Freestyle Karate originally was founded in the 90's in Niles, Ohio by Kyoshi James Bundy. Drawing on his background in jidokwon, he began to cross train in other martial arts as well as western style boxing. Years later, he devised a curriculum based around the athleticism of Tae Kwon Do and the practical self defenses of Muay Thai and the jiujitsu ground fighting systems. Because this martial art draws on the practical aspects of several different styles, he named his style "freestyle". Sensei Wendy Sfikas began training with Kyoshi Bundy and earned her third dan black belt in 2006. When Kyoshi Bundy shifted his attention to training MMA fighters, Sensei Wendy took over the Freestyle Karate dojo and moved the school to Howland. The cornerstone of Freestyle Karate is to let everyone learn at their own pace. Children are divided into class based on age and rank. Each class is designed to help each age level study martial arts in the way best suited to the student.
