Not many local artisans can list two Grand Champion Cheesemaker of Ohio awards and a heritage that dates back to the 1930s on their resume. As part of Broad Run Corner, a cheese- and wine-lovers’ destination at the gateway of Amish Country, the Broad Run Cheesehouse, Deli & Boutique offers 30-plus varieties of locally made and imported cheeses, as well as fine meats, gourmet and specialty items. Understandably, the Cheesehouse draws followers from all over the country. Housed within a charming Swiss chalet-style building, Broad Run gives a nod to its Swiss heritage as well as its #1 best-selling Blue Ribbon Swiss cheese. Its history as one of the oldest cheesemaking operations in the area is just as rich and nuanced as the cheeses it produces. In 1933, a group of local dairy farmers from the area formed a co-op to showcase cheeses handcrafted from their milk. Its cheesemaker, Hans Schindler, along with his wife Nancy, bought the business in 1978 and transformed it into Broad Run. Sadly, Hans passed away in 2004. His vision for the Corner came to life when the Schindler family opened the 10,000-sqare-foot Swiss Heritage Winery in 2018—the perfect complement to their cheeses—and then Hans’ Place Restaurant, both next to the Cheesehouse. Shopping for cheese can make you hungry, so the family chose to open a deli in the building that serves delicious sandwiches pairing their cheeses with Amish-made bologna and summer sausage, and assorted deli items. Whether gifting for others (or yourself!) the boutique is packed with everything from jewelry and women’s clothing to eclectic home décor such as mirrors and wall art, tabletop décor, and stunning lace curtains, doilies and pieces. Spend a day at Broad Run Cheesehouse, enjoying flavorful gourmet cheese that has stood the test of time.
