The Akron Beacon Journal provides news and information to residents of Akron, Ohio, and the surrounding area. The newspaper averages 54 pages daily and 112 pages on Sunday. It has a circulation of more than 142,000 daily and 188,000 for its Sunday edition. It has received four Pulitzers, including the 1994 Gold Medal for Meritorious Public Service. It has also won more than a dozen national awards for reporting, editing and design. The paper is one of the oldest continuously operated businesses in Summit County, Ohio. Its roots trace back to 1839 with the founding of The Summit Beacon. The Summit Beacon merged with the Akron Evening Journal in 1897. The newspaper was acquired by Knight-Ridder in 1903 and has recently been acquired by The McClatchy Company.
