Minnkota Power Cooperative is a regional power generation and transmission cooperative serving 11 member-owned distribution cooperatives. The company s service area of more than 34,000 square miles is located in eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota. The company owns and operates the Milton R. Young Station 1, a primary mine-mouth generating facility that consists of two units supplied with lignite coal from the adjacent mines of BNI Coal. The station is equipped with a Babcock & Wilcox cyclone-fired boiler coupled to a 235-megawatt General Electric steam turbine generator. The company also operates the Milton R. Young Station 2, which is owned by Square Butte Electric Cooperative and is equipped with a cyclone-fired boiler coupled to a 439-megawatt Westinghouse turbine generator.
