Located in Raleigh, N.C., Wake County Human Services was reorganized in the late 1990s from the previous departmental agencies of social services, public health, mental health, affordable housing and child support enforcement. The consolidated human services agency acts as a single department under the county manager, receiving counsel and policy direction from a 24-member human services board of directors. It offers various adult services, including addiction and treatment, adult care and homes, guardianship, crisis services, disability, mental assistance, transportation, and veterans programs. Wake County Human Services also provides various child and family services, such as adoption and foster care, child mental health and educational and medical assistance programs. It also offers court services, case management, financial arrangements, school-based substance abuse treatment, emergency services, immunization programs, maternal and infant health programs, and pediatric developmental surveillance. The agency also provides economic assistance programs, including emergency shelter, employment and housing assistance, and homeless services.
