History
The Bascom owes its existence to artist Watson Barratt, who had a vision of establishing a permanent gallery in Highlands for the display of works created by regional artists. Watson and his wife, Louise Bascom Barratt, were long-time supporters of the Hudson library and their bequest to found a gallery within the new library was visionary at the time. The Bascom purchased a six-acre piece of property at the edge of downtown Highlands: the Crane riding stables and horse farm. A team was developed to carefully plan the new campus and buildings that consisted of DeWolf Architecture of Highlands, Lord Aeck Sargent Architecture of Atlanta, Ross Landscape Architecture of Highlands, Ferry, Hayes & & Allen Designers (interior), and Trehel Corporation (construction), and Wayne Yonce and Arnold Graton as consultants. Focusing on reconstructing the historic barns on the property and to maintain the pastoral setting, construction began and was finally completed in 2009.
