Murphy-Brown, the livestock production subsidiary of Smithfield Foods, is among the world s largest producers of pork and one of the nation s leading turkey producers. Murphy-Brown was established in 2001 through the combination of North Carolina-based Murphy Farms, which Smithfield Foods acquired in 2000; Carroll's Foods, which Smithfield Foods acquired in 1999; Brown's of Carolina; and the Utah-based Circle Four Farms, which Smithfield Foods acquired in 1998. The company employs nearly 4,900 people with more than 840,000 sows. Murphy-Brown is based in Warsaw, N.C.
