Established in 1929, North Carolina State Highway Patrol is a law enforcement agency that works towards reducing collisions and making the highways of North Carolina safe and crime free. It employs a staff of more than 1,800 troopers who cover over 78,000 miles of North Carolina roadways. The law enforcement agency performs duties related to impaired driving, the seizure of drugs and investigations of fatal collisions on highways. North Carolina State Highway Patrol also guides traffic during hurricane evacuations, re-routes traffic around chemical spills, and directs traffic during terrorist occurrences. With a troop location in Raleigh, N.C., it supports and conducts a variety of safety programs related to bicycles, seat belts and school buses.
