The North Shore Harbormasters Association (NSHMA) is a collaborative organization of Massachusetts Harbormaster Departments from Boston to the New Hampshire border. They serve as a regional chapter of the Bay State Harbormasters Association, promoting training, best practices, and sharing maritime specific knowledge among Harbormasters throughout the Commonwealth.
As municipal guardians of the waterfront, Harbormasters in the NSHMA have a wide range of duties including harbor planning management, mooring dockage management, education of the public regarding safe and legal boating, law enforcement of statutes and regulations, and emergency search and rescue operations. They work closely with other departments in their communities, as well as the Massachusetts Environmental Police and the United States Coast Guard, to ensure the safety and security of the waterways. Additionally, they maintain a working relationship with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to address criminal activities related to the movement of goods, currency, drugs, weapons, and people.
