Gateway Education Center, located in Greensboro, N.C., is part of the Guilford County School District and serves children with disabilities from up to age 21 years. Founded in 1950, each student's curriculum is guided by an individualized educational plan. The plan considers cognitive ability, self-help, vocational training, leisure and recreation, communication, physical and occupational therapies and medication, and is developed in collaboration with teachers, therapists, parents and guardians and students. Its infant and toddler program is for children up to age 3 and provides physical, occupational and speech therapies, and counseling. Its preschool program serves 3- to 4-years-old children, and focuses on communication, self-help, motor and independence skills and participation in preschool activities with adaptations. Another program focuses on the age group 5 to 22, in groups of five to seven students, with teachers certified in the areas of mental and physical developmental problems. This program provides a full continuum of medical and educational services, including music and art programs.
