First Legacy Community Credit Union, formerly known as School Workers Federal Credit Union, was established in 1941 by a group of educators in the Charlotte School System. With nearly 8,000 members and assets of close to $29.0 million, First Legacy has been providing its members with savings and loan programs since its inception. In January 2020, First Legacy merged with Self-Help Credit Union, bringing expanded financial services and opportunities to the Greater Charlotte area.
Founded by J.E. Grigsby, the principal of Second Ward, the first public high school for black students in Charlotte, First Legacy initially operated out of the basement of Grigsby's home. Over the years, the credit union grew and recruited staff members to pool their monies for deposits. Today, First Legacy continues to serve its members with a commitment to community development and financial empowerment.
