Family Health International grew from a contraceptive research project that began at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1971. The organization is an international, nonprofit public health organization, which manages research and field activities in more than 70 countries to meet public health needs. Family Health offers a range of technical services, including clinical research in HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections and other infectious diseases, contraceptive technology and women s health. It works with a variety of partners, including governmental and nongovernmental organizations, research institutions, community groups and the private sector. Family Health International's headquarters are in Research Triangle Park in Durham, N.C. The organization also operates a second management center in the Washington, D.C., regional offices in Bangkok and local offices in more than 30 other countries.
